HANNAH SULLIVAN'S
The first day I walked into this class, I thought I knew more about photography than I actually did. I knew how to focus a camera and maybe use some rule of thirds here and there, but that was the extent of my knowledge. Honestly, I did not think I would get so much more from this class, but I definitely did. This trimester in this class I have learned so much and had a lot of fun. As a comparison, here is a photo I took at the beginning of the year compared to one I had taken at the end. If someone had asked me to create the photo on the right without using photoshop or anything of the sorts, I would have thought they were crazy. My knowledge has grown so much in such a short amount of time I'm very impressed with myself because I'm not always a super quick learner. However, you could say learning how to use the camera just "clicked" for me (haha). In addition to have a new surplus of photography skills, I have also learned how to use photoshop. Differing from my prior knowledge on photography, I knew absolutely nothing about using photoshop. Despite that, this class has taught me how to use a large variety of different tools and now I can do a few assignments practically with my eyes closed. Here is a photoshop assignment from the beginning of the trimester compared to one near the end. As you can see, at the beginning I just did very basic stuff such as recoloring and cropping, but as the class went on, my skills and knowledge of using photoshop only expanded. I ended up enjoying this class so much more than I had expected and am really glad I took it! My overall knowledge of everything has just grown so greatly over the past two months and it was a really good experience!

For this week, we had to create two pieces in photoshop, both being composed of other various images. One being an assortment of puns we make, and the other being two photos defining a word each. Here is my visual dictionary: Here is my pun: I had a lot of fun with this assignment and enjoyed being able to make something just kind of for fun, nothing very serious. I experimented with using some tools without specific instruction and was able to come out with some fairly good products.
This week Isabella, Erin, and myself had a lot of extra time this week in class so we decided to go find a dark room and create light paintings. We were able to cover a window with a blanket to make sure the room was as dark as we could get it. Here is my best photo: f/6.3 10.0 ISO 100
For this week we worked with taking portrait shots. We got to work in a studio with different lightings and also natural lighting with a bounce card. We also talked about how to properly frame the portrait shots. On the left is the studio shot and on the right is the natural shot. I really enjoyed this week. It was super fun to work in the studio and mess around with the lighting and such. I also really enjoyed being behind and in front o the camera this week. I learned a lot about how to properly set up a portrait image and get the correct lighting. This week also helped me work with the camera in manual mode more, which I was not very skilled at before.
For this week's assignment, I thought it would be fun if I went downtown with my friend, Sylvia, and we completed our assignments together. I did architecture and she did portraits. Here is my best photo:
I cropped some extra bits out and also put it into rule of thirds. After this I adjusted the vibrance and saturation a little to give it a bit more color.
For this week's photoshop assignment, we were to go online and find photoshop tutorials and follow them. This assignment would let us test our photoshop abilities by finding something that challenges us. Dash of ColorPolaroidScreen JumpMental SphereOverall, I learned a lot from this assignment. The polaroid and mental sphere photos specifically taught me a lot because they had me using new tools in photoshop. The mental sphere taught me how to put things such as clouds and others as effects into photos instead of trying to insert a picture, which I have tried to do and it is very difficult to make look nice.
For this weeks photo assignment, I decided to go for black and white. I had a lot of fun with my dogs in this shoot.
Here is my best photo before and after being edited: For this photoshop assignment we were to take pictures at a scene with our subject in different places and then merge them in photoshop to create the appearance of there being multiple of the same person. To do this, we used layer masks. Here are my two pictures: This was one of my favorite assignments we've done so far. I liked how the photoshop part was fairly simple, yet still taught me something new. It was fun to set up the subject in the different locations. For this week's shooting assignment, I decided to shoot portrait. I went with my friend, Emily, downtown Ann Arbor to take some pictures. We went to the top of one of the parking structures which worked out well because one side had a fence that had some nice lines for a background. I experimented with some different distances from the subject and also amount of spacing. I really liked the lighting and colors in all the pictures so I did not put them into photoshop. Here is my best photo: f/5.6 1/500 ISO 100 This shooting assignment was the first time I have legitimately shot portrait shots and I am very happy with the result. I really enjoyed capturing the emotions in her facial expressions as we were shooting. I struggled with finding the ideal perspective, depth, and spacing at first but I soon found what I thought looked good and what else maybe not so much.
For this assignment we were to take some pictures of our school then put them into photoshop and make them unique. You could do this many different ways, so I experimented multiple times with different things. Here is my best one: I like how this one came out because I was able to make the school match the water tone wise. My edits could definitely be smoother but overall I think it's pretty good. This is another favorite of mine. I struggled with trying to get the image foggy, but I think I did a fairly good job. I had a few other attempts, but they were not nearly as good as the two above I really enjoyed this assignment. I am much more familiar with photoshop after this assignment. I now know how to combine photos and move them around/transform them in photoshop to create a brand new image.
